Can I replace my regular protein powder with Collagen Powder or use them interchangeably?Updated 6 months ago
It depends on your goals and needs. Collagen is a protein and absolutely counts towards your daily protein requirements. However, Collagen is missing Tryptophan which is one of the 9 essential amino acids that our body can’t produce and we must obtain them from our diet by eating animal protein (such as our beef bars and biltong) or a combination of vegetable proteins (including nuts like in our collagen bars) or by taking a protein supplement. If you’re not getting enough Tryptophan then you may need a protein supplement other than Collagen.
Collagen is also lower in leucine than other protein sources which is important for muscle growth. Collagen peptides are best used to support connective tissues (ligaments, tendons, myofascial, bones, skin, gut lining etc.) and other protein powders (whey, pea, soy etc.) are best used to build lean muscle mass.
